Our training provides an overview to health and safety legislation, particularly relevant to the sector as well setting out the key responsibilities for boards and some key points relating to governance and gaining assurance.

Whilst this training can be delivered in one session, it works especially well being delivered in 2 x separate sessions which enables attendees to digest the first session before moving on to the leading safety session. Training can be delivered face to face or virtually to suit the needs of boards operating within the sector; this includes delivery in an evening, where required.

The main topics include:

Session 1 – Health & safety requirements, including employee and resident safety, regulations relevant to our sector and the importance of managing contractors.

• General introduction to health and safety, the law and responsibilities under the Health & Safety at Work etc Act 1974
• Regulations relevant to our sector
• The two key elements of health & safety in social housing:
  • Corporate health & safety
  • Tenant & resident safety
• Tenant & resident safety – responsibilities held by the landlord to ensure the safety of tenants including the ‘big 6’ resident safety considerations and more emerging risks…
• The importance of managing contractors

Session 2 – Governance and leading health and safety, the three lines of defence approach and gaining assurance of compliance and when leadership falls short (real examples).

• Governance & resident safety – what does the SHR expect?
• Essential principles of leading health & safety at work
• Plan, Do, Check, Act
• Challenging to gain assurance and the 3 lines of defence model
• When leadership falls short, and lessons learned.

This training is delivered ‘live’ by our knowledgeable and professional trainer; whether delivered in the classroom environment or virtually, our trainer encourages discussion and invites questions to ensure understanding.

Attendees will be introduced to the health and safety basics and legal requirements for subjects relevant to the social housing sector; this includes health and safety for employees and in the wider context of safety for tenants and residents, including the ‘big 6’ areas such as gas, electrical, asbestos, fire, legionella, lifts, damp and mould as well as other emerging issues such as RAAC.

In addition, attendees will understand the ‘Plan, Do, Check, Act’ approach in a social housing setting, supporting understanding of the ‘three lines of defence’ approach and challenging to gain assurance.

Certification: an e-certificate of attendance and emailed copy of the slide presentation in a handy note format will be provided for all delegates who attended the session.
