Course Overview
Damp and mould is high on the agenda of housing associations and Councils and there is little doubt that staff should be aware of the current requirements.
This full day course, aimed at technical officers, is a ‘must attend’ session that builds on existing understanding, dispels myths associated with the subject and considers sometimes inappropriate ‘general’ advice given to interested parties, including tenants and residents.
Often utilising a ‘generic’ and outdated understanding of a number of factors and conditions responsible, the specific issues of individuals are not always identified/addressed. We know that recent ‘improvements to stock have compounded the condensation problem and clouded ‘non-culpable/culpable’ responsibility issues, so we take a look at what we should consider in today’s ever-changing world.
This session challenges understanding and ensures delegates go away with the confidence and understanding needed to protect the relevant parties’ interests. It is ideally suited to building surveyors, maintenance surveyors and inspectors, asset officers, housing colleagues and everyone from a more technical background who requires an understanding of this subject area.
This course will be held ‘Live Online’ on 3rd December 2026, from 9.30am – 4.30pm (times are estimates and will depend on the interaction of delegates throughout).

What’s Covered?
This full day session is relevant to organisations operating in the social housing sector and provides a more technical look at aspects of damp, mould and condensation, including the following:
- An understanding of the causes, symptoms and cures associated with ‘damp’, condensation and mould
- Explores the legislation that impacts this area and the implications of failure to comply
- Explores rising damp – truth or myth?
- Identifies the diverse range of detection tools available such as moisture, carbide and capacitance meters, borescopes, hygrometer sticks and humidity boxes, etc…
- Considers strategies for the effective removal/reduction of ‘damp’ and mould problems
- Informs officers on how to communicate sound knowledge based principles to affected parties, including tenants and residents
- Identifies how to protect interests and implement effective procedural guidance to combat failure.
Learning Outcomes
This training session is delivered either in the ‘classroom’ environment or ‘live’ by our knowledgeable and professional trainer and is interactive; encouraging discussion and delegate participation to ensure skills learnt will be able to be confidently applied in practice; there will be ample time for delegates to ask questions throughout the session.
Delegates will broaden their ‘technical’ knowledge and understanding of condensation, damp and mould and the causes of each as well as reviewing legislative requirements, sector guidance and strategies for the effective removal/reduction of damp and mould problems including a detailed look at rising damp.
Delegates will also explore the diverse range of detection tools available such as moisture, carbide and capacitance meters, borescopes, hygrometer sticks and humidity boxes, etc and understand how such tools will support the removal/reduction strategies and consider how to communicate sound knowledge based principles to affected parties, including tenants and residents.
Certification: An e-certificate of attendance will be provided for attendees along with a set of electronic ‘memory notes’ (pdf).
