Highfield Awarding Body of Compliance (HABC) Level 3 Award in Legionella Control for Responsible Persons (RQF)

Course Overview

There is now greater awareness of legionella and the devastating impact it can have on environments and people. While high-profile outbreaks and public enquiries into those outbreaks have been prominent in the news over the last few decades, it’s become more important than ever to ensure those responsible for controlling the risk of legionella have the requisite knowledge.

This HABC accredited qualification has been designed for delegates who want to widen their knowledge and understanding of the effects of legionella disease and the importance of the ‘responsible person’. It is aimed at those individuals with managerial responsibility for Health and Safety, who have sufficient authority, competence and knowledge of water systems and water hygiene management, to interpret regulations such as the Approved Code of Practice L8:2013 and HSG 274 parts 1-3.

The course includes relevant and specific examples relating to the social housing sector.

Assessment

This qualification is assessed by learner workbook which requires learners to provide a short response to prescribed questions within a workbook set by Highfield Qualifications. Successful learners will have to demonstrate knowledge and understanding across the breadth of the qualification syllabus.

What’s Covered?

The course has been developed to support those currently in the role, or aspiring to be in the role, of Responsible Person relating specifically to control of legionella on a site.

The course will give learners the knowledge and understanding of the effects of legionella on the body and the impact and outbreak could have on a working site, as well as how to identify and control the risks associated with legionella bacteria and how legislation and codes of practice can support its control, including:

  • The risks associated with legionella bacteria and legionellosis and conditions needed for bacteria to multiply
  • Roles associated with management of legionella;
  • Approved Code of Practice L8 and Technical Guidance overview
  • How to control the risks associated with legionella bacteria, including the requirements of a written scheme; and implementing this within your organisation
  • Legionella risk assessments and record keeping
  • Review; and training and competence of staff.

Learning Outcomes

This training session, whether classroom based or virtually is delivered ‘live’ by our knowledgeable and professional trainer and is interactive and encourages delegate participation to ensure skills learnt will be able to be confidently applied in practice; there will be ample time for delegates to ask questions throughout the session.

Delegates will gain information to widen their knowledge and understanding of the key requirements relating to legionella, particularly in the role of the ‘Responsible Person’ to ensure they are aware of the legal requirements and responsibilities in discharging their duties and allocating sufficient resources to minimise risk.

The course includes taking a look specifically at the risks associated with hot and cold water systems in ‘domestic’ type properties where social housing providers have a responsibility.

Certification:  Successful delegates will be awarded a Highfield Level 3 QCF certificate.
